March to the Board Meeting Wednesday, February 25th! See you THERE!

Teachers, Parents, Students, Community:

March to the OUSD Board of Education Meeting and Speak-OUT!

Wednesday, February 25th

  • Demand a Strong Contract for Oakland Teachers!
  • No Union Busting Attacks on Seniority and Transfer Rights!
  • For Smaller Class Sizes and Protections for Special Education Programs!
  • Defend Public Education!

Oakland teachers are fighting for a strong contract with a guaranteed wage increase that will allow teachers to stay in Oakland. The District is receiving more state funding for Oakland schools than in many years, and funding is projected to rise but the money is being spent on outside contractors, Central Administration, and other projects outside the classroom. The Oakland Education Association (OEA) is fighting for smaller class sizes and hard caps on Special Education caseloads.  We are fighting for lower Counselor to student ratios. We will not accept the union busting attacks that Superintendent Wilson and the District Bargaining Team are making on existing seniority and transfer protections. We oppose the reconstitution of schools – making teachers, aides, and other school staff reapply for their own jobs; we oppose the conversion of any public schools to charter schools.

We stand united with students and families in defense of quality public education accessible to all the young people in Oakland

Support Montera Teachers, Psychologists, and Counselor

As you may know, our union OEA, has been bargaining for a fair contact with the district.  During these last few months, the district continually has not been bargaining in good faith. The district took money off the table twice (very illegal). They went backwards by demanding changes in transfer rights after saying they wouldn’t request any new contract language. They have barely budged on class size. They still have made NO proposal on special ed caps and their salary increase proposal language states that it is contingent on whether there is enough funding left over.

Is this the type of district you want your child to be in?  Your tax dollars are not being used in the most effective way possible. Demand the best from OUSD!  Your child cannot thrive in a classroom that is packed and receive the best education from teachers that are over worked and underpaid.  We continue to lose teachers to other higher paying districts. Your child, your family, and Oakland deserve better.

Therefore, to build pressure and gain support from the community, Montera has decided to work to rule.  We will work according to our contract.  We will arrive at work at 8:30 am and leave at 3:30 pm (psychologists: 4:30pm).  We will not do any volunteer work such as clubs, lunch activities, and sports.

We want to show the district and our community that teachers work above and beyond what we are expected to do.  This is seen as the norm, yet our pay and work conditions are substandard to any other district in California and many parts of the country.

Please support our teachers, psychologists, and counselor!
